The Exchange II

1 min read
Hello, everyone! I'm going to be acting the part of judge for a new writing OCT (original character tournament) that mippins is going to be hosting. After the success of her last one, TakeFlightOCT, this should be no surprise that I'm joining up with her again.

This OCT's going to be opening up for entrants shortly, and all are welcome to try out! It's going to be hosted from TheExchangeII, so go Watch that account and more info will be up soon!

Thanks!

First of all, I would like to thank each and every one of the deviants who submitted the 49 entries I recieved for this contest. You all did an amazing job.

But sadly, someone has to choose a winner! Rest assured that the work each of you put into your entries hasn't been wasted, and maybe your artwork will some day positively affect the life of someone in need.

Here are our winners!

Visual: Winner

"Tangled" by Shikin!!

This piece of art obviously took some amount of time to perfect, and the detail is interesting- definitely one to look at for a few minutes at the least.

As Shikin says, "The strings represent that suicide also isn't dependant on one person's choices, but on the influence others give that person. Remember, we're all entertwined together and sometimes our connections will get tangled." This is a great idea to think about- it is true!

Go on and check out the rest of Shikin's great gallery, after you congratulate her! :)

Visual: Runner-up

"Will you listen now" by GrimRose13!

This artwork, coupled with the short personal story in the Author's Notes, makes for a very touching feel to the piece.

Written: Winner

"Heal" by friesaregood!!

This piece of writing, longer and more in-depth than some of the other submissions, seems to perfectly capture the feeling, in the first-person view, of depression and what it takes to feel the need to self-harm. It is a great read, and quite well done!

Make sure you go and congratulate friesaregood on a nice job, and look at the rest of their gallery!

Written: Runner-up

"Revelation" by Setep-Ka-Tawy!

Unlike most of the other written pieces that were entered, this one is not from the point of view of the affected person, but from the view of one of their friends. The poem's formatting is open, and seems to have come from the heart.

Original Rules and Prompt:

March First. This day is for awareness of self-harm, depression, and suicide everywhere. I personally know many people who could benefit if more others knew about, and cared about, these conditions.

Self-harm is any cutting, burning, stabbing, bruising and so on that one does to oneself. It is an unhealthy addiction, though not everyone knows that.
(Here is the Wikipedia Article in case you don't know what I'm talking about, it has some useful links.)

Suicide and depression can be closely tied, and I think that all of this can be helped, even saving someone's life, with just a little awareness!

So, I have decided to have a contest of sorts. There are no special prizes like subscriptions or DevDollars, but don't let that turn you aside. This is a worthy cause.
Your prize for entering, is being featured by some people, and knowing that what you did helped. Please, everyone, don't turn away beacuse there is no material gain to be had.

Anyway, here are the details.

Subject: Self-harm, depression, and suicide.

Medium: Anything. Prose, poetry, traditional, digital, whatever you want.

Deadline: April 10th, 2009 23:59 EST (That is GMT -5) If you need more time, tell me (tiraldan) specifically.

To enter: Post your entry, and note me or comment here with a link to the Deviation's page.

Other rules: As many entries as you want, per person. This can be about your own experinces (with self-harm suicide or depression), what you think it would be like, a representation of anything to do with it... pretty much anything you want. There will likely be a feature at the end. Entries must be submitted specifically for this contest!

 to all.
